Up Your Friendly – for my boy and his grandpa

My son adores his grandparents, and so I have chosen this photo for My Captured Moment – it’s when his nana and grandpa took him for a short trip around the shopping centre. They had just started babysitting him when I went back to work after maternity leave.

What I love about my boy Tyler is his ability to make his grandpa smile. Not just a little smile, a proper corner to corner smile! And this is a big deal, as my father is a Parkinson’s sufferer – one of the symptoms of which is rigidity of the facial muscles. So I love to see my dad and my boy enjoying each other’s company 🙂

This week is Parkinson’s Awareness Week (20-26 April), and Parkinson’s UK are running a challenge called Up Your Friendly. It’s not about raising money – it’s about raising awareness. We all probably should be nice to people anyway, but it’s easy to rush by with our busy lifestyles, so here’s a chance to stop and, well, be friendly!

You can join by doing something nice – like making a cup of tea for your work colleagues, letting someone go in front of you in the supermarket queue, or a friendly hello to a mum at playgroup – anything! Then spread the word of your good deed – share or tweet using the hashtag ‪#‎upyourfriendly‬. Here are some more suggestions:

You can also take the “Up Your Friendly Challenge” at http://www.upyourfriendly.com/
Get your friends to sign up to the challenge too, and help make the UK a friendlier place.

My #upyourfriendly deeds so far this week have been helping mums struggling with pushchairs by holding the doors open (and that’s with me having a pushchair too!), and today I bought my family flapjacks as a special treat.

How’s being friendly going to help Parkinson’s sufferers? Well, the idea is to:
• make life a little easier for people with Parkinson’s – by showing how being patient and kind can make a huge difference to people with the condition
• change attitudes to make society more Parkinson’s-friendly
• highlight some of the everyday realities of living with Parkinson’s

So go on, up your friendly!

  2. What a lovely way to raise awareness. Elsa’s great grandad is a Parkinson’s sufferer too and her Daddy walked from the Midlands to Wales last year to raise money for it. I’m glad it’s being brought to people’s attention this week.

    • It is a great campaign, a real feel-good one. Elsa must bring a lot of joy to your grandad. Good for Daddy raising money, it all helps 🙂 My siblings and I did a walk in Greenwich last year, and this year they are doing the 10k! I will be purely fundraising – I can’t run 10K! xx

    • Thanks Hannah! Sorry to hear your Grandma’s got it. It sucks, but there’s a lot of support out there, and with the right medication and attitude it’s manageable. Lots of love xx
