Welcome to ‘Toddler Trips’ – a 12-week series of toddler-friendly places to visit in the UK. With it being that time of year when you’re thinking of sunshine and holidays, hopefully this series will inspire you on where you can go! I will include the things we saw and where we stayed, starting this week with Bude.
We visited Bude, North Cornwall, in August 2013, and we loved it. As well as the scenery, there was such a cheerful family atmosphere about it. These are the places of interest we saw and where we stayed while in Bude.
1) CROOKLETS BEACH
The first beach we discovered, just off the town centre. This one was a pebbly one and Tyler enjoyed people watching here, and climbing up and down the steps. There were plenty of surfers, and a hut serving hot drinks and ice cream, so we had a coffee here. 
2) BUDE SEA POOL
This is one of the last remaining tidal lidos in the country! It’s like an outdoor swimming pool but it naturally fills with seawater with the tide. This photo doesn’t do it justice, it is huge and quite amazing to look at!
3) SUMMERLEAZE BEACH
We kept going along Crooklets Beach, past the Sea Pool, and ended up at Summerleaze Beach. This is the sandy one and was full of families. Right by the town centre, below the cliffs – we had to go down loads of steps, but it was worth it! I had a nice snooze in the sun, and that’s with the boy climbing on me!
This was the first time Tyler discovered sand. I had to show him how to play with it, and he got the hang straight away, diving in and rolling around. Of course with sticky sun cream, he had sand all over his face!
And there are beach huts here – ever so pretty.
4) BUDE CANAL
We discovered the canal after visiting the Tourist Information centre, which was in the middle of this grassy area. It’s very picturesque with canal boats and a Nature Reserve! And as our toddler love ducks, we sat here a while!
5) BUDE HARBOUR
Right at the end of the canal, past restaurants and pretty houses, was Bude Harbour. Although there were no boats when we got there, we saw plenty of local kids just diving in the water, swimming, and fishing too. Tyler was mesmerized watching them play.
6) HEBASCA HOTEL
This is where we stayed, a brand new luxury hotel (in 2013). It was the 5th day of our roadtrip so we thought we would splash out – I think it was £110 for the night. It was lovely having a brand new room and a luxury ensuite where I had a relaxing bath. The room was pretty small, but we just about fitted our travel cot by the bed. The bed was the most amazing, comfortable bed EVER – we slept soooo well! Getting to the hotel was easy using our sat nav, and it was located right in between Crooklets Beach, the golf course and the Sainsbury’s superstore (which we found very handy). This was the view walking from Sainsbury’s to the hotel – it looks like a painting, it was truly beautiful.
The front garden of the hotel had a huge herb garden, which the chefs actually used to cook in the hotel restaurant – a very trendy looking restaurant it was too. Breakfast was served there and they had a highchair for Tyler – he had his rice crispies and we had a cooked breakfast of American pancakes – which were delicious 🙂
7) The things we didn’t get time to do was visit Bude Castle, or visit the beaches further out such as Widemouth Bay – perhaps next time.
If you are planning a Cornwall holiday, I definitely recommend Bude.

Gorgeous – I love Cornwall but don’t know Bude so this is really useful. The sea pool sounds really interesting and love the veach huts.

I’ll definitely be taking Marley to Cornwall when he’s a bit older. I’ve been before but it’s a five hour drive so will wait a year or so before going again. Your pictures look fab, so will have to give Bude a try 🙂 #mummymonday

I live in Bude and love it here. I love that it’s seaside but is a bit off the beaten track so hasn’t been overdeveloped. We have a four year old and she’s loving it too.

What a great idea for a series. I love Bude but haven’t been for years, I’d like to return with the twins soon as I am sure they’d really enjoy it, I hear the surf is phenomenal too.

Oh my, you must visit Bude next time, it has such a different atmosphere than the other Cornish seaside towns, think less touristy and more chilled out. Yeah do it! xx
