When I wrote my post about why we moved to Slough, a lot of the comments mentioned a place called Burnham Beeches, which I actually hadn’t heard of. So we thought we’d check it out last week.

Burnham Beeches is a woodlands area in Slough, just north of the Farnham Road area. We parked up in the car park on Lord Mayors Drive, paying a £2 all day charge, and walked in. The first thing we saw was the Beeches Cafe, next to the Information Centre and loos.

After a bite to eat, we walked behind the cafe on to the path which led to the woodland area. There are a few trails you can do, including the Historical Trail and the Geology Trail, but we decided to do the Sensory Trail, which is the shortest at under 1 mile long and is suitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs. This is the Sensory Trail Map:

It wasn’t very well signposted, so we ended up walking down Lord Mayors Drive in the centre first.

We realised it was a bit too straight, this can’t be the sensory trail! So we walked down a path to our left and discovered it (phew!). The path took us to a pond called Upper Pond, filled with lily pads.

Then we walked north of the pond, and this is where we came off the sensory trail and walked towards the Heath. We had a rest at a bench that was carved into a log. Here we saw a large pile of logs.

But it’s not just any old pile of logs, it’s was put there to give the appearance of a fallen tree, so that creatures could inhabit here.

We walked along a path to the right, that led us through more woodlands and trees. We saw families cycling and people walking their dogs. Everyone was smiley and friendly.

After a while we got to another pond that looked different from the earlier one, and then realised we were lost. Lost in the woods! My husband turned on the maps app on his phone, and found out we were at Middle Pond. A 5 minute walk up, we found Upper Pond and were back on the Sensory Trail. We had noticed these carvings dotted around, and now know that these are Sensory Trail points – this one was number 5. So if you ever do the trail, look out for these carvings to make sure you’re on the right path. We know for next time!
