Toddler Trips #9 – Paignton

Last year, we had an end-of-summer famiiy holiday in Paignton, part of the English Riviera in Devon – me, my husband, Tyler, my brother and my sister. We got the train down and it was Tyler’s first long train journey (3.5 hours). It cost us about £50 for a return ticket from Slough which we bought in advance. Tyler was really good on the train, and when he was restless, we just put Peppa Pig episodes on his Hudl.toddlertrips-paignton
We stayed in a 3-bedroom holiday home about a 15 minute walk from the station, up a hill! That was hard work, the roads were soooo steep. Still it was worth it, we were right by the sea. This is the view from the front window, complete with local seagull. We stocked up on food and supplies from the local Lidl by the station.

Once we had unpacked and relaxed for a bit, we set out exploring. Here is a list of things we did in Paighton:

1) Visit Paignton Sands
This is the beach nearest the town centre and with the pier. When we visited, a Rainbow charity event had just happened, so there were rainbow swirls in the water. As you can see in the photo, it was a grey afternoon, but still it was so lovely there, to hear the sound of the waves and playing in the red coloured sand.

2) Play games at Paignton Pier

My sister got addicted to this – for every game you play in the pier, you get awarded tickets which you can exchange for prizes! We had literally 4 days of games and collected about 300 tickets – this got us a toy car and a bubble wand!

3) Visit the bus station

Haha, not really an activity, but if you have a bus-obsessed boy, this is the place to go. We actually got on this bus to go to Paignton Zoo.

4) Visit Paignton Zoo

A short bus ride away from the town centre, right by Asda, is Paignton Zoo. Tickets cost £16.50 but we got 10% off for showing our bus tickets,and Tyler was free being under 3. It was so much fun here, we saw all sorts of animals – flamingos, giraffes, hippos, tortoises to name a few. My husband bought some fudge, and a goat came and took it out of Tyler’s pushchair – it was so funny! 5) Visit the Dartmouth Steam Railway

From our holiday home, we could see and hear steam trains in the distance – really beautiful. Well they are steam train journeys run by the Dartmouth Steam Railway where you can ride a steam train from Paignton to Kingswear for Dartmouth. An adult return is £15. The entrance is at Paignton train station.

6) Visit Pirates Bay Adventure Golf

Just off Paignton Sands is this Adventure Golf course – you can’t miss it, it’s so bright! It was £5.50 per adult and we had a go around the course while Tyler was napping in his pushchair. We had no problem pushing the buggy around the course. It was so much fun, there were 15 sections, and on the 15th we had to knock to ball into the tiniest hole through a cage – and I did it! I won! My prize was a free ticket to play again if we ever return.

So that was our fun family holiday in Paignton. I really recommend it if you’re after a proper English holiday! We also did a daytrip to neighbouring Torquay while we were there – I’ll tell you about that next week!

  1. Proper English seaside holiday, love it! We went there for a day trip last summer but our boy was only 5 months old so we just played on the beach and dipped his toes in the sea for the first time (and a bloody seagull mugged me for my ice cream!). It looks like great fun for a toddler though, my boy is bus mad too so the bus station would be a must, haha! #SummerDays

  2. Pirates Adventure Golf sounds really good fun! My mum used to holiday in Paignton when she was a child so I would love to go there, sounds like you have a fun week! #summerdays

    • Oh yes it was so fun, expecially as I won haha! Ah you should go! Maybe if your mum has old photos, you could re-enact them and do ‘before and after’ photos! xx
