Maternity Style #2 | New Look

This week I’m bringing you two outfits, and I’ll show you how I made these two n0n-maternity dresses suitable for wearing during pregnancy. In these photos I am 24 weeks pregnant.

The first is this blue and white polka dot dress by Yumi which I bought from New Look in size 14.

I bought this dress before I was pregnant, but because of the pleats around the waist, it made me look as though I was. Not good if you’ve just got a food belly! So I put it at the back of my wardrobe, and now it’s the perfect maternity dress. The fabric is really light and silky, and as the waist is just above the bump, there is loads of room to grow under the pleats.

So my advice for finding a non-maternity dress that is suitable for pregnancy is to look at where the waist is on the dress – the higher the better – and choose dresses that are pleated from a high waist, which would means there is lots of fabric for your bump to grow under. Choose lightweight fabrics – I would avoid stiff cotton which would feel tight.

My second outfit choice is also a non-maternity dress from New Look, size 14.

It was a dress that was elasticated at the waist. I turned the dress inside out and unpicked the elastic so that is became a giant smock. As the dress was elasticated, this meant there was loads of fabric. It’s totally loose and comfortable to put on, and I tied a black ribbon belt above the bump to give it some shape. And this means I can loosen or tighten the waist according to how I’m feeling on the day.

So when you next shopping for  maternity dress, have a look at the non-materity dresses with an elasticated waist and turn it inside out to see if you can unpick the elastic.

With both outfits I am wearing a black top underneath (non-maternity from Dorothy Perkins), and black glitter maternity leggings that are from a maternity shop in Portugal (I bought loads of maternity clothes from when I went on my babymoon for Tyler back in 2012). My boots are from New Look.

  4. I despair so much at the lack of nice maternity clothes out there so I have done exactly the same as you … find clothes that will work for both – in particular high waisted dresses. I love the idea of the ribbon belt. With my first pregnancy I wore A LOT of dresses as third trimester was in summer but this time I’ve hit it in Spring so am searching around for long tops that cover the bump! #bloggerclubuk

    • Yes it’s really difficult to find nice maternity clothes, and they are so pricey for something that will last just a few months! Long tops, that’s exactly what we need right now. I’m glad I’ll be in the third trimester when it’s warmer, it’s dresses all the way for me! Xx

  5. When I was pregnant I found I had lots of dresses that I could get away with wearing with bump. I did get a couple of new bits and I’ve loved the maternity range at New Look. Very creative of you to un pick! #BloggerClubUk

    • Yes, if the dresses are loose, we can definitely get away with it! New Look have a good range, I’ve got loads of loungy tops from there. Hehe, I do love customising clothes! Xx

  6. You look fab by the way, and what a clever idea – I didn’t know you could do this. I tried to find the best maternity dresses that looked cool and not frumpy, which was pretty hard.   8. Love the dresses, there is a real lack of good maternity wear out there and I have also been buying no maternity stuff, including jersey tops with a bit of stretch!! Clever idea with the pleats. Although I am now trying to be good and make things last until baby arrives, when I will go and get some new feeding bits!! – Any excuse.
