How Drew Barrymore inspired me to write!

Drew Barrymore Never Been Kissed Quote

When Dawn from ‘Pennies Add Up’ asked me to join her ‘Quicky Quotes’ linky, I struggled as I don’t usually use them in my everyday life. Apart from this one which was so suitable for me as a blogger and was inspired by an extraordinary coincidence, all to do with Drew Barrymore!

I have always liked to read chick-lit, something light-hearted and easy to get absorbed in, that will have a happy ending. I usually read a book in 2 weeks, on the train into work and in bed before I go to sleep. So I am a regular at my local library, where they have a ‘Quick Choice’ section – handy for mums in a rush. Last month I selected ‘The Gospel According to Drew Barrymore’ by Penny Wright. I thought was an odd title, but it sounded funny.

That week I met my university friends for dinner at Tinseltown off Oxford Street. We were talking about friendships, and so I told them about this book I was reading which is all about friendship. Now this itself was unusual because I don’t normally talk about the books I read incase they think I’m an airhead! They asked what the book was called. I said, “Don’t laugh, it’s called The Gospel according to Drew Barrymore”. I brought it out of my bag, and one friend proceeded to read the last few pages of it. I confess I do read the back page first too, sometimes I can’t wait to find out what happens.

We carried on having a natter, and when we chat we don’t really notice our surroundings. About half-an-hour later I looked up and gasped! They thought I had seen a ghost. And I kind of had – it was none other than Drew Barrymore herself above my friend’s head. She was there all along!

I took this to be a sign, and decided to have a Drew Barrymore movie marathon that weekend. I started with ‘Never Been Kissed’, which I ended up watching alone (wah!), as my boy and the other half retreated to the bedroom to watch what they wanted on their tablet/phone! Luckily my sister came over the next day and we watched ‘The Wedding Singer’ and her new film ‘Blended’ – all of which I found hilarious. I do love chick-flicks!

Out of the three films, it was the quote from Never Been Kissed that stuck in my mind. I started off this blog in January and I thought it would be specifically about upcycling and design ideas, I had a weekly plan of what to write – and this is where I struggled. With actually living my normal life, I found I couldn’t stick to the plan and I wasn’t enjoying it. Not good. By expanding to write about our everyday life, things we love, places we have visited – in a way that readers might find useful or inspirational – I found the blog grow naturally. I love writing it now, and I hope people love reading it too!

So if you are stuck on what to write for your blog, just remember Josie Grossie and write what you know.

P.S. For those of you interested in typography, I created the quote design in Photoshop using the below typefaces:
