Earlier this month I told you all about HomeSense opening their fab new branch in Taplow. Well to celebrate, I have teamed up with HomeSense to offer you lucky readers the chance to win a £100 HomeSense gift card! (UK residents only)
If you’re unaware of who HomeSense are, where have you been?! 😉 They are the sister brand of TK Maxx, selling the most coolest, quirkiest homewares and gifts. They also sell practical stuff too. On the HomeSense launch day I got these drawer organisers and glass jars, with the aim to do a spot of decluttering.
I was fed up of packets of pasta cluttering up my kitchen cupboard, the packets never resealed properly and I was always finding rogue pastas at the back. And as for my kitchen drawers, I couldn’t even see what was in there!

So I cleared a shelf on my bookshelf to make a display of pasta jars, and sorted out that kitchen drawer!

It’s so much easier to find things now, it makes me so happy!

Buy plastic storage boxes for your cubboards its help to stack, food can and its easy to take out so everything doesnt fall out

Open an eBay account and sell things you don’t use anymore. It’s crazy how much money you can make and it will spur you on to get rid of more.

Twice a year we have a clear out and a car boot sale. If you haven’t used it in 3 months it goes.

3 times a year I take 2 days to declutter and deep clean each room. When I first retired and did this it took so long to declutter the cleaning was not so thorough but now I usually just have a few bits to finish off on the 2nd day 🙂

Do it regularly! It’s no use decluttering every couple of years – it has be smaller job done regularly.

I’m quite lucky as due to job restrictions I move every 2 years – but I do make a point of if it is broken it’s binned, if it can be repaired or recyled it is and if it is heading to the attic…it needs a new home.

Have 3 boxes, 1 keep, 1 bin and 1 charity shop. Only take out what you can put away in 20 minutes and be brutal!

I have a ‘one in, one out policy’. So if I buy say a new pair of shoes an existing piece of clothing has to be donated to charity – it make me more conscientious about purchases and do I really need it.

Anything that hasn’t been used for a year must be donated, given away or thrown out.

Have “Chuck” “Donate” and “Sell” boxes and be ruthless with stuff you don’t need

Be realistic! If it hasn’t been used for the last year get rid of it or even better pass it on to a friend

My best decluttering tip isto actually book time out to go through one drawer or cupboard at a time and think about the items:
– have you used it in the last 6 months?
– will you use it in the next 6 months?
If the answer is no and I cant think of any other reason to keep it then I get rid.
I used to never get rid of everything and the first time I had a huge clear out I literally took 10 bags of stuff to the charity shop and threw another 10-12 bags of stuff away and I was like why on earth didnt I do this sooner

Use the Four-Box method to declutter. Have three boxes and a bin bag. Label the boxes, “Put Away”, “Give Away/Sell” and “Storage.” Items to be thrown away belong in the bin bag.

when the charity bags come through the door make yourself look in the wardrobe and be honest are you going to wear it again, it is very liberating to make space in the wardrobe and drawers

I think you just have to be really strict when decluttering – if you haven’t used it recently, bin it! otherwise you end up hoarding everything! xx

I am obsessed with decluttering, I can’t stand the mess! My best tip is to be strict, don’t use it, loose it! My partner is a nightmare, he will keep a ripped old top ‘in case of fancy dress’, it drives me nuts. The kids are quite good, they have clear outs and we take toys and clothes that no longer fit to the charity shop or hand them down. But the top tip is to be strict and do it regularly or it’ll build up and up if given the chance!

Put everything you think you do not need anymore in a box, if after a year everything is still in the box, throw it out.

To help identify wardrobe items to clear out, hang all of your clothes with the hangers in the reverse direction. After you wear an item, return it to the wardrobe with the hanger facing the correct direction. After six months, you’ll have a clear picture of which clothes you can easily discard.

Little and often. 1 drawer a day, or 1 shelf and you’ll soon get through it without it seeming like a massive chore.

I’m the absolute worst for keeping stuff, even got some clothes from my twenties, eek. My son has helped me try and sort out some household items to sell, donate or skip. Why do most of us keep things? Memories, or ‘it will be useful one day”! Good reasons, but probably impractical.

Declutter for 15 minutes every day. It’s amazing how much you can get through if you just do it in small increments like this.

My best tip would be to remember that the more simple you keep things, the easier it is to clean them and there are those in need that would welcome your cast offs so you would be helping a good cause too.
