Today – 29th July 2017 – Marks & Spencer is leaving Slough High Street! It is a sad day as it’s a huge space and I’ve often been in there to buy bread, fancy food and this was where I bought Tyler’s school trousers from! When I first moved to Slough 3 years ago, there was an outlet store upstairs and a cafe, where you could get some real bargains, but suddenly it disappeared and there was just the downstairs space which was huge. Admittedly we mostly shopped in the food area and kids clothes. There rest of the space for adult clothing was hardly used, and was a bit of a mis-matched shambles in my opinion. I took some photos of the store last week, as you know people get all nostalgic when a store closes.
First here are some old photos, courtesy of The Slough I Remember group – I’m guessing 1970s?
And here are photos from last week (July 2017). Firstly the front of the store, the top half unchanged from the olden days when you compare with the photo above.
The bakery – always popular, it was always a mission to get to the bread.
The tills in the food department.
The tiny Home and Greeting Cards sections, with kids clothing in the background.
Tills in the clothing department.
My favourite department – baby clothes! Though I only really browsed, waiting for the sales.
The side entrance in Queensmere into childrenwear, with the ramp for pushchairs and wheelchairs.
The entrance from Queensmere next to Costa into food – hardly used this side because of the steps.
Yeah so that’s it, sad to see it go. Hopefully they’ll be back if the rumours of new shopping centre being built way in the future is true.
For now, so long M&S Slough – thanks for all the browsing time, I’ll miss you!
It is beyond the pale how many big high street names are being closed down in Slough – Next is going soon from what hubby tells me 😞
It is quite distressing really… What’s going to be left? Is there anything to tell Slough residents of future plans for their high street? 😠

Oh I know, and yes Next is closing in September. I do wish the planners would be more open as to what is happening with the shopping centre, instead of us having to rely on rumours. In the meantime, we kind of in limbo, aren’t we 😦
