The Hungry Caterpillar Cupcakes Recipe

Everyone loves The Hungry Caterpillar book right? So howabout making cupcakes to go with the story. We love bringing stories to life using food and my kids really enjoyed decorating this one. You can make this at any time of year, and especially to celebrate World Book Day!

Making the Hungry Caterpillar cupcakes is very easy to do, and it used the 4oz cake recipe we shared last week.

Ingredients

The Hungry Caterpillar Cupcakes Recipe

Cake
4oz (110g) softened butter/marg
4oz (110g) caster sugar
4oz (110g) self-raising flour
2 eggs
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 – 2 tbsp milk

Icing
5oz (140g) softened butter
10oz (280g) icing sugar
1-2 tbsp milk
Few drops green food colouring
Smal amount of red/yellow/green/black fondant icing

For the cupcakes, please refer to the 4oz recipe. You will need 9 cupcakes. We lined the muffin tray with 8 green paper cases and 1 red paper case.

Once your cupcakes have baked and cooled, arrange them on a tray or a chopping board in the shape of the caterpillar.

Icing

To make the green icing, beat the butter until it is soft. Add half the icing sugar and beat until smooth. Add the green food colouring and the rest of the icing sugar and mix until it’s smooth and creamy.

Spoon into a piping bag with a star nozzle and pipe onto 8 cupcakes in a spiralling motion. Here is Tyler demonstrating.

For the face you need red, yellow, green and black fondant icing. I got a Dr Oetkar mixed pack for the supermarker for a couple of quid. This is great because I can tape up the unused fondant so it is airtight, and this can be used for future projects.

Roll the red fondant and cut a circle shape with a jam lid (or a cutter if you have the right size). Roll the yellow and green and cut eye shapes with scissors (copy the picture from the book). Roll the black fondant into ears and feet.

Dab a bit of icing on the cake and stick the red face on followed by the eyes and mouth. The green eyes on top of yellow, so the yellow is like an eye border.

Stick the ears (or maybe they are antennae??) with icing. Arrange the feet around the bottom of the cupcakes and… voila!
