We had a lovely afternoon at The Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre just before the summer holidays. It’s a must for fans of Roald Dahl books. Situated in the village of Great Missenden, Buckinghamshire (where Roald Dahl lived), the street is full of character houses, bright doors and bunting! The pastel blue museum is based in a Grade II Listed former 16th century coaching inn 😍
There are 4 main rooms where you learn about what inspired Roald Dahl’s stories as you go through, and the kids had a trail to fill in. And you can see his actual room and chair where he wrote his stories!
The Story Centre has interactive activities, like make your own stop-motion movie, and crafting. You can pose in the replica Roald Dahl chair too.
There was also a Fantastic Mr Fox room when we visited, that was just there for the summer.
It took us about 45 minutes to go through the museum. It was different from other days out – here the activities got you to think and be creative. I’d say to get the most from this visit, your child has to have an interest in reading. For young children, I’d suggest watching some Roald Dahl movies so the museum will make sense to your child. Both of mine have seen Matilda, Charlie & The Chocolate Factory and James & The Giant Peach.
We had lunch from the museum cafe at the start (the bread used in the sandwiches was so nice!) and we had coffee and ice cream after.
At the end, the kids got a sticker from the gift shop for completing their trail. There is also a village walking trail you can do too.
Visiting this museum is a calm and peaceful activity. It’s not a whole day out, but you could easily combine with for example Bekonscot or Kew Little Pigs which are a 15 min drive away.
Tyler wants to read Fantastic Mr Fox now – love how this museum encourages a love of reading ❤️
