Which after-school class to choose for your child?

When your child is in primary school, it is a good idea to have some structured after-school activities for them. Of course you don’t have to, but from my experience there are many plus points:

  • Gives your child a hobby
  • Enhances their interests
  • Have friendships outside of school
  • Gets your child off their tablet lol!
  • Gives your child a sense of achievement

There are many themes you can choose from, ranging from sports to art to dance to drama. Check out my post here for classes local to Slough.

My children between them do swimming, drama, street dance and ballet. And they love the classes, looking forward to them each week. Today I’d like to talk about their drama classes, which they do at Perform.

Kids Drama Classes at Perform

I initially chose Perform because of the location. They do classes up and down the country, but we chose the one in Gerrard’s Cross. It was perfect because the classes were on a day we would go to this village for a coffee/babycino after school anyway. And because it’s an age 7-12 class, they can do it together. After a year, we still do the classes here, because they are fun and they love their teacher!

So now we still visit our fave coffee shop after school. We relax and chat about school, do some colouring. And we run through their scripts before we head off to their Perform class.

The class in held in a church hall, and there’s a room where the kids get changed into the Perform t-shirts, joggers and trainers. They like to be comfy for class. They have a collection on Perform t-shirts now as you get one for each show you complete. So they have Ebeneezer, Outlaw and The Dream t-shirts.

This term the show they are practising for is Cinderella Rocks – I actually can’t wait to see it. Sometimes I sit in the spare room to get some work done and I overhear the children practising, it sounds so cool!

Life Skills via the Weekly Focus

The classes don’t just focus on the play though. Each week there is a different weekly focus. For example, the other week the focus was on “expressing our feelings”. They used drama exercises to explore this. Helping children understand emotions early mean they are more likely to express themselves verbally if they know how they feel. Bottling up feelings can lead to pent-up frustration and moods. I really like how the weekly focus helps children with everyday life skills.

At each class, I make sure the kids have a bottle of water. They will have had a snack and hot drink at the coffee shop, so they’re not going in hungry. When I pick them up after class, they are always so excited to tell me what they got up to. I then drive home and their dad will have prepared dinner for them. All good!

I hope you found that interesting as to how we fit drama classes in as an after-school weekly routine! I’ll share how the Cinderella Rocks show goes in a few weeks.

Next term and a FREE £30 voucher for you!

By the way January is a good time to join Perform – new year new start and all that! They have just announced that the age 7-12 class will be rehearsing for Killa Queen – an exciting adaption of the legend of Snow White (think Hamilton meets the Brothers Grimm).

If you sign up via my personal link, you can receive a £30 voucher towards classes: perform.org.uk/voucher?xpc=sabrinaj3
